A Backpacker’s Guide To Koh Lanta

Updated: Dec 27, 2024

Koh Lanta is the perfect chill spot for backpackers. With beautiful beaches, jungle vibes, and loads of affordable places to stay, it’s a slice of paradise that’s both relaxing and full of adventure. Whether you’re into beach days, tasty street food, or exploring local culture, this island has something for everyone. Let’s dive into what makes Koh Lanta a must-visit!

Koh lanta

When to Visit Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta, a peaceful island in Thailand, is best visited during the dry season for sunny weather and calm seas. Here’s what to expect throughout the year:

Dry Season (November–April):

The peak tourist season, with clear skies, calm waters, and temperatures around 25–32°C. Perfect for beach days, snorkeling, and island hopping. It’s the best time for outdoor activities, but expect higher prices and more visitors.

Hot Season (March–May):

Temperatures rise to 30–35°C, with high humidity. Beaches are quieter, and mornings or evenings are the best times for exploring. Sunsets during this season are stunning.

Rainy Season (May–October):

Frequent rain showers and rough seas make water activities difficult, and many businesses close for the low season. However, the island is lush and green, with cooler temperatures and fewer tourists.

Best Time: November to April for ideal beach weather and outdoor activities. Visit during the rainy season if you prefer solitude and don’t mind some rain.

How To Get There

Getting to Koh Lanta involves a few steps, but the journey is relatively straightforward. Here’s a detailed guide on how to reach this beautiful island:

Krabi to Koh Lanta

The most common way to start your journey to Koh Lanta is by flying into Krabi International Airport (KBV), which is the closest major airport to the island. Many budget airlines like AirAsia, Thai Airways, and Bangkok Airways offer flights to Krabi from Bangkok and other parts of Thailand. Krabi is just 2 hours away from Koh Lanta, making it the most convenient option.

Once you arrive at Krabi Airport, you can take a taxi or private car to the ferry pier. It costs around 600-800 THB for a shared taxi or 1,500-2,000 THB for a private car. The drive to the Klong Jilad Pier (Krabi’s main pier) takes about 30 minutes.

  • By Shuttle Bus: If you’re looking to save a little money, there are shared shuttle buses from the airport to the pier. They cost around 150-200 THB per person and take about 30 minutes.

  • By Minivan: Minivans run frequently from Krabi Town or the airport to Koh Lanta. These typically cost about 200-300 THB per person. The total journey time is around 2-2.5 hours, including the ferry.

Once you reach the pier (either Klong Jilad Pier or the Saladan Pier in Koh Lanta), take a ferry to the island. The ferry ride lasts about 30-40 minutes and will drop you off at Saladan Pier on Koh Lanta. Ferries generally run every 1-2 hours and cost between 300-400 THB.

Note: If you’re traveling in high season (November to April), ferries and transport options might be busier, so it’s a good idea to book in advance or arrive earlier in the day to secure your spot.

Phuket to Koh Lanta

If you are coming from Phuket, the easiest way is to use a combination of bus and ferry, as there is no direct ferry from the airport.

From Phuket Airport, you can catch a minivan or shuttle bus directly to Krabi Town or a pier. The minivan ride typically costs around 300-400 THB and takes about 2-2.5 hours. From Krabi, you will then need to take the ferry to Koh Lanta, as mentioned above.

Alternatively, you can arrange a private transfer (taxi) from Phuket to Koh Lanta, which takes around 4-5 hours, including the ferry ride. A private taxi is more expensive, costing between 2,000-3,500 THB depending on the provider.

Bangkok to Koh Lanta

If you’re coming from Bangkok and don’t want to fly to Krabi or Phuket, you can take an overnight bus to Krabi Town or Trang. From there, take a bus or minivan to the pier, followed by the ferry to Koh Lanta. This journey can take about 12-14 hours in total.

Koh Phi Phi to Koh Lanta

Ferries run regularly between Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta. The ride takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and costs around 300-400 THB. This is the quickest and most convenient option.

Koh Samui to Koh Lanta

First, you need to take a ferry from Koh Samui to Surat Thani or Donsak Pier (approximately 1.5-2 hours). Then, take a bus or minivan from Donsak or Surat Thani to Krabi Town, followed by taking transport to the ferry port. Then take the ferry to Koh Lanta. This can take about 6-8 hours in total.

If you are travelling from Koh Tao or Koh Phangnan, you will need to get a ferry to Koh Samui first. Then follow the instructions from there.

Arriving at Koh Lanta

Once you arrive at Saladan Pier on Koh Lanta, you’ll find plenty of taxis, tuk-tuks, and songthaews (shared trucks) ready to take you to your accommodation. The island is fairly large, so expect to pay between 150-300 THB for a ride to your hotel, depending on the distance.

Travel Tip

Ferries are less frequent in the low season (May to October), so it’s important to check the schedules in advance and plan accordingly.

Getting Around Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is a relatively large island, and getting around can be easy and affordable if you know your options:

1. Motorbike/Scooter Rental

Renting a motorbike or scooter is one of the most popular and convenient ways to explore Koh Lanta. It gives you the freedom to go at your own pace and reach less-accessible areas, like hidden beaches and jungle paths.

Cost: Around 200-400 THB / £4-7 per day, depending on the bike type and rental place.

Where to Rent: There are many rental shops throughout the island, especially in Saladan Pier, Klong Nin, and Kantiang Bay.

Travel Tip

Make sure you have a valid international driver’s license and check the condition of the bike before renting. Wearing a helmet is mandatory.

2. Bicycles

For a more eco-friendly and slower-paced way of getting around, you can rent a bicycle. It’s ideal for short trips or exploring the local area at a relaxed pace.

Cost: Around 100-150 THB / £2-3 per day.

Where to Rent: Bicycle rentals are available at most guesthouses, hotels, or local rental shops.

3. Songthaews (Shared Pickup Trucks)

Songthaews are shared taxis that operate on Koh Lanta. They are one of the most affordable ways to get around the island, though they are not as frequent as other options. These trucks operate on set routes, mainly between Saladan Pier and the southern areas of the island (like Kantiang Bay, Klong Nin, and Ao Nui).

Cost: Around 30-60 THB / 70p-£1.30 per person for short trips.

Travel Tip

They may not run frequently, so be prepared for some waiting, or ask your hotel for more information on where to catch one.

4. Tuk-Tuks

Tuk-tuks are another fun way to get around, especially if you’re traveling in a group. They can be a bit more expensive than songthaews but offer more comfort.

Cost: Around 150-300 THB / £3-7 for short trips, depending on the distance.

Travel Tip

Always agree on the price before starting the ride. They are usually found at hotels, popular tourist spots, or flagged down on the road.

5. Taxis

While there are fewer taxis on Koh Lanta compared to other destinations in Thailand, you can still find a few around. They can be used for airport transfers, trips to other areas on the island, or evening trips.

Cost: Around 500-1,000 THB / £12-20 for longer trips.

6. Car Rental

Renting a car on Koh Lanta is a good option if you’re traveling with a group or prefer extra comfort. It’s less common than motorbike rentals, but there are a few agencies offering cars.

Cost: Around 1,200-2,000 THB / £25-40 per day for an economy car.

Travel Tip

Be aware that roads on Koh Lanta can be narrow, and driving conditions may be different from what you’re used to. You will also need an international driver’s license.

7. Walking

While Koh Lanta is a relatively large island, if you’re staying in a specific area (like Saladan, Klong Nin, or Kantiang Bay), you can get around on foot for short distances. Walking is ideal for exploring beaches, local shops, or dining spots nearby.

It’s best to walk during the cooler parts of the day (early morning or evening), as the island can get quite hot during the midday sun.

8. Boat Tours

While this isn’t a daily way to get around, boat tours are a popular option for exploring Koh Lanta’s surrounding islands and hidden beaches. You can take day trips to nearby islands like Koh Rok, Koh Haa, or Mu Ko Lanta National Park by private or group boat tours.

If you’re interested in island-hopping, it’s a good idea to book tours in advance, especially during high season.

Cost: Around 1,500-3,000 THB / £35-60 per person for a day trip.

9. Private Transfers (Airport or Hotel)

If you’re traveling to or from Saladan Pier or Koh Lanta’s airport, many hotels or transport companies offer private transfers to specific destinations. You can book these in advance for a hassle-free ride.

Cost: Around 500-1,500 THB / £12-25 depending on the distance.

Some accommodations provide free or discounted transfers for guests, so ask in advance.

Travel Tips for Getting Around Koh Lanta

Fuel:

If you rent a scooter, you’ll need to refuel at one of the small local gas stations or convenience stores that sell fuel in bottles. Make sure to check your fuel level before heading out.

Navigation:

Google Maps works well on Koh Lanta for getting around, though some areas, especially in the southern parts of the island, can have less reliable signals.

Safety:

Always wear a helmet when riding a motorbike or scooter and try to avoid driving at night if you’re unfamiliar with the roads.

Things To Do In Koh Lanta

Whether you’re a beach lover, a nature enthusiast, or just here for the relaxed atmosphere, there’s something for everyone. Here’s a guide to the best things to do on Koh Lanta, all with that laid-back backpacker twist.

1. Chill on the Beaches

Koh Lanta’s beaches are what dreams are made of: long stretches of sand, crystal-clear waters, and hardly a crowd in sight. You can easily spend a whole day hopping from beach to beach, and it won’t cost you a thing!

Klong Dao Beach: This one’s a backpacker favourite! Great for chilling out, taking a dip, or just enjoying the view. It’s close to Saladan Pier, so it’s easy to get to.

Klong Nin Beach: Quieter and more peaceful, perfect for watching sunsets. Grab a cold drink at one of the beach bars and just kick back.

Long Beach: You’ll love this one if you’re into a more relaxed vibe. It’s got a handful of cafes, hammocks, and beach bars, plus one of the best spots to catch the sunset.

Kantiang Bay: If you’re up for a little adventure, head to this less-visited beach. It’s perfect for snorkelling, and you might even have the whole place to yourself.

2. Wander Through Old Town

Koh Lanta’s Old Town is the island’s little slice of history. Think wooden houses, narrow lanes, and quiet vibes. It’s the perfect spot to explore if you want to get away from the typical tourist hustle. Wander around and stop at the small local shops selling everything from homemade jewellery to little trinkets.

Lanta Animal Welfare: If you’re an animal lover (or just need a feel-good moment), check out the Lanta Animal Welfare centre. You can meet some rescue dogs and cats, or even volunteer for a few hours.

3. Snorkel and Dive

Snorkelling

Koh Lanta is home to some of the best snorkeling spots in Thailand, with calm, shallow waters teeming with colorful fish and coral reefs. You don’t need to spend much to enjoy this activity - just grab a mask, snorkel, and fins from one of the local shops or beachside rental spots and head out to the water.

Koh Rok: This small island is about an hour away by boat and is a popular snorkeling spot. The waters are incredibly clear, and you can see vibrant corals and schools of fish up close. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a sea turtle or a manta ray. Tours usually run around £25-35 for a day trip.

Koh Haa: Another awesome spot just off Koh Lanta’s coast, Koh Haa is famous for its underwater caves and diverse marine life. This is a great place to snorkel if you’re looking to see something a bit different. The calm waters make it ideal for beginners too.

National Park Area: The waters surrounding Koh Lanta’s Mu Ko Lanta National Park are also home to some incredible coral reefs and marine life, perfect for a snorkeling day trip. The national park offers a peaceful, less touristy vibe, and you might have the water all to yourself.

Travel Tip

Bring your own gear if you’re planning on snorkelling more than once, it’s much cheaper than renting every time.

Scuba Diving

If you’re looking to explore deeper waters, scuba diving on Koh Lanta is an absolute must. The island has numerous dive shops that cater to all levels, from beginners to certified divers looking for a little adventure.

Diving Courses: Most dive shops offer PADI Open Water courses which last a few days, giving you the chance to learn the basics and get certified. Prices are around £250-300 for a full course, including theory, practice dives, and a certificate at the end.

Diving Trips: For certified divers, there are daily diving trips to nearby islands like Koh Haa, Koh Rok, and Hin Daeng (famous for seeing manta rays and whale sharks). These trips typically cost around £35-60 for a day trip, including lunch, and they’ll take you to some of the best dive sites in the region.

Marine Life: Koh Lanta’s waters are home to an incredible variety of marine life, including colorful coral gardens, schools of fish, nudibranchs (sea slugs), and even sharks! Diving here is relatively low-cost compared to other destinations in Thailand, making it a great place for budget travelers.

Travel Tip

If you’re looking to save some cash, ask about dive packages that include multiple dives or courses - they can help you get more dives for less money.

4. Go on a Jungle Adventure

Koh Lanta isn’t just about beaches - there’s a jungle waiting to be explored. Grab a scooter (or join a tour) and check out the island’s lush interior.

Lanta National Park: Located at the southern tip of Koh Lanta, Lanta National Park is a must-visit for nature lovers. The park is full of dense jungle, mangroves, and rocky cliffs, and it’s one of the best places to go if you want to immerse yourself in the island’s wild side.

  • Hiking: There are several trails within the park, ranging from easy walks to more challenging treks. One of the highlights is the Lanta Lighthouse, which sits on a cliff and offers breathtaking views of the ocean and nearby islands. The hike up to the lighthouse is around 1.5 km and is pretty easy, but the view at the top is totally worth the effort.

  • Wildlife Spotting: If you’re lucky, you might spot some of the local wildlife, such as monkeys, lizards, and a variety of bird species. Keep your eyes peeled as you hike through the jungle!

  • Swimming & Relaxing: After your hike, take a dip at the park’s Ao Nui Beach—a small, secluded cove that’s perfect for a refreshing swim.

Hike to Waterfalls: Koh Lanta has a few beautiful waterfalls that are perfect for cooling off after a jungle adventure. These spots are relatively low-key, meaning you can usually enjoy them without the crowds.

  • Klong Jark Waterfall: This is one of the most accessible waterfalls on the island, located in the west of Koh Lanta. The walk to the waterfall takes about 20-30 minutes through the jungle, and it’s a great way to spot some local flora and fauna. Once you arrive, you can take a swim in the cool pool beneath the waterfall. It’s a peaceful spot, ideal for a break from the sun.

  • Klong Hin Waterfall: Located near Klong Hin Beach, this waterfall is a bit more off the beaten path. It’s less visited, which means you can enjoy the surrounding jungle in peace. It’s a bit harder to reach but well worth it if you’re up for a more adventurous hike.

5. Enjoy the Nightlife (Low-Key Style)

Koh Lanta’s nightlife is far more laid-back compared to places like Koh Phi Phi, but that’s what makes it perfect for backpackers looking to wind down after a day of adventures.

Beach Bars: Grab a cocktail (or a cold Chang) at one of the beach bars along Long Beach or Klong Nin. These places have a relaxed vibe, with live music and fire shows on some nights.

Lanta Old Town: For a quieter night, head over to one of the chilled-out bars in the Old Town for a quiet drink and a chat with the locals.

6. Kayaking and Paddleboarding

The waters around Koh Lanta are perfect for some light adventure. Rent a kayak or paddleboard for the day and explore the coastline or head into the mangroves.

Mangrove Kayaking: If you’re keen to mix a bit of adventure with some water fun, mangrove kayaking is a perfect way to see another side of Koh Lanta’s landscape. The island’s mangrove forests are home to a variety of wildlife and offer a tranquil, beautiful setting to explore.

  • You can easily rent a kayak and paddle through the mangroves or join a guided tour. These tours typically last a few hours and will take you through quiet canals surrounded by lush greenery. It’s a peaceful way to explore the island’s hidden corners and spot wildlife like crabs, kingfishers, and sometimes even monitor lizards.

  • The most popular areas for mangrove kayaking are around the Saladan area in the north and Ban Saladan village.

Paddleboarding: If you’re into trying something new, grab a paddleboard and take it out on the calm waters. It’s a great way to explore, get a workout, and enjoy the views.

7. Take a Boat Tour to Nearby Islands

Koh Lanta is the perfect base for exploring nearby islands, and there are plenty of boat tours that won’t break the bank.

Koh Rok & Koh Haa: These islands are about an hour by boat and offer some of the best snorkeling in the area. Tours usually include lunch, and it’s a fantastic day trip if you’re looking to get off Koh Lanta for a bit.

Mu Ko Lanta National Park: If you’re into nature, consider taking a boat tour around the national park’s smaller islands. You’ll get to see wildlife, visit quiet beaches, and explore secluded coves.

8. Eat, Eat, Eat!

Koh Lanta’s food scene is seriously underrated, and as a backpacker, you’re going to love the variety and budget-friendly prices. From street food to beachside cafes, there’s always something tasty to try.

Don’t miss out on the pad thai, som tam (papaya salad), or massaman curry at local restaurants. Most places have really affordable prices.

Fresh Seafood: Head to Saladan Pier for some of the freshest seafood you’ll ever taste, served right by the water.

Cafes: If you need a break from Thai food, there are plenty of cool cafes serving everything from vegan bowls to smoothies and coffee.

9. Sunset Watching

No trip to Koh Lanta is complete without watching one of its iconic sunsets. There’s something magical about the sun setting over the Andaman Sea.

Best Sunset Spots: Head to Long Beach, Klong Nin, or Kantiang Bay for some seriously breathtaking views. Grab a drink, find a comfy spot, and just soak it all in.

10. Relax and Recharge

Lastly, sometimes the best thing to do on Koh Lanta is… nothing at all! Kick back at your hostel or guesthouse, nap in a hammock, or do some reading by the beach. This island is all about taking it slow.
