Koh Tao has the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, with clear waters for diving and peaceful spots to unwind. I remember feeling like time slowed down here - whether it was taking in a sunset or exploring the island’s quiet corners. If you’re looking for an authentic backpacker experience, this guide will help you make the most of your time on Koh Tao.

When To Visit Koh Tao, Thailand

The best time to visit Koh Tao, Thailand is between February and April, when the weather is at its driest and sunniest. This is perfect for beach days, diving, and outdoor adventures. If you prefer a quieter experience, try visiting during the shoulder months of May and October, when there are fewer tourists but the weather is still decent.

The monsoon season, from November to January, brings more rain and can affect some activities, but if you’re okay with the occasional downpour and quieter streets, you can still enjoy the island’s charm during this time. Just be aware that some tours and diving trips might be limited.

How To Get To Koh Tao

Getting to Koh Tao is part of the adventure! Since it’s an island, you’ll need to combine multiple modes of transport to reach it. I would recommend using Rome2Rio to plan your route and 12Go and skyscanner to book your tickets.

1. From Bangkok

If you’re coming from Bangkok, you’ll first need to make your way to the nearby mainland port, Chumphon or Surat Thani, before catching a ferry to Koh Tao.

Option 1: Flight + Ferry

  1. Fly to Koh Samui: You can take a short flight from Bangkok to Koh Samui (around 1 hour), which is the most popular and quickest option. Flights are frequent and can range from budget airlines to premium carriers.

  2. Ferry to Koh Tao: From Koh Samui, catch a ferry to Koh Tao. The journey typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, and you can book tickets with companies like Lomprayah, Seatran, or Songserm.

Option 2: Train + Bus + Ferry

  1. Train to Chumphon: If you prefer land travel or want to experience the scenic Thai countryside, take a night train from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong station to Chumphon. The overnight train (typically 8-10 hours) is an affordable option and often provides sleeper compartments.

  2. Bus or Taxi to the Ferry Terminal: Once in Chumphon, you’ll need to take a short bus or taxi to the ferry terminal.

  3. Ferry to Koh Tao: The ferry from Chumphon to Koh Tao takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Option 3: Bus + Ferry

Bus from Bangkok: You can also opt for a direct bus from Bangkok to Koh Tao, though it’s a long journey (around 12-14 hours). Many bus services offer overnight travel, and you’ll arrive at one of the ferry piers on the mainland to catch the boat to Koh Tao.

2. From Koh Samui

If you’re already on Koh Samui, getting to Koh Tao is straightforward. The ferry ride from Koh Samui to Koh Tao takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the ferry operator. Lomprayah, Seatran, and Songserm all run regular services between the two islands, with prices generally ranging from 500-800 THB. You can book tickets at most guesthouses or online.

3. From Koh Phangan

Koh Tao is just a short hop away from Koh Phangan, where you might find yourself if you’re heading to the famous Full Moon Party or exploring the island. The ferry ride from Koh Phangan to Koh Tao is quick - usually about 30-45 minutes. Ferries run several times a day, and it’s an affordable way to travel between the two islands. Prices are typically around 300-400 THB.

4. From Surat Thani

If you’re coming from Surat Thani (often the nearest airport if you fly in), you can take a bus to the ferry terminal in Donsak and then hop on a ferry to Koh Tao. The combination of bus to Donsak and ferry to Koh Tao takes around 4-5 hours in total. Bus and ferry companies often bundle the tickets, making it easy to book through the same service.

5. From Overseas

For those coming from outside Thailand, your best option is to fly into Bangkok or Koh Samui. From there, follow the flight or overland routes mentioned above.

Ferry Companies:

Lomprayah: Fast, comfortable, and reliable service, with connections between Koh Samui, Koh Tao, and other nearby islands.

Seatran: Offers ferry services from Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and the mainland.

Songserm: A cheaper but slower option, often with more basic services.

Travel Tips

Booking Tickets

You can buy ferry tickets at travel agencies, through guesthouses, or online at 12Go. Booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak seasons.

Ferry Times

Ferry schedules vary depending on the time of year and weather, so always check ahead. Be prepared for occasional delays during the rainy season.

Seasickness:

The ride can sometimes get rough, especially during the monsoon season. Consider taking seasickness tablets if you’re prone to motion sickness.

Getting Around Koh Tao

1. Motorbike/Scooter

The most popular and convenient way to get around Koh Tao is by motorbike or scooter. Renting a scooter gives you the flexibility to explore at your own pace and access the island’s more secluded spots. Rental prices range from around 200-350 THB per day depending on the type of bike and season, and you can rent one at most guesthouses or local shops. To rent, you’ll need a valid international driving permit. However, it’s important to note that the island’s roads can be steep and winding, so make sure to ride carefully and always wear a helmet.

2. Bicycles

If you prefer a slower pace, renting a bicycle is a good alternative. Bicycles are an eco-friendly and affordable option for exploring the island, while also giving you a nice workout. Renting a bicycle typically costs between 150-250 THB per day, and they are available at most places that rent scooters or in some guesthouses and beachside shops. It’s a great way to explore the more relaxed areas of Koh Tao, especially if you’re staying near the main beaches.

3. Taxis (Songthaews)

For a more traditional mode of transport, you can take a songthaew, which is a shared taxi in the form of a pickup truck with bench seats. These are available for transport around the island and can take you to different beaches or popular areas. The cost of a ride typically ranges from 100-300 THB depending on the distance. Songthaews are commonly found near areas like Sairee Beach, and your accommodation can also help arrange one if needed.

4. Longtail Boats

Another fun way to get around is by longtail boat, especially if you want to explore Koh Tao’s stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters. Boats can take you between beaches or to popular snorkeling and diving spots. Prices typically range from 300-800 THB depending on the distance and whether you share the boat with others. Longtail boats can usually be found near most beaches or arranged through local guesthouses, dive shops, or tour operators.

5. Walking

If you’re staying near main areas like Sairee Beach, Mae Haad, or Ao Leuk, you might prefer to explore on foot. Many places are within walking distance of each other, and walking is a great way to take in the island’s atmosphere at a slower pace. The island is pedestrian-friendly in these areas, though be prepared for some uphill walking as Koh Tao is known for its steep terrain. Walking is free, aside from your time and energy, and it’s an enjoyable way to discover the hidden gems of the island.

6. Private Cars

While not the most common option, you can hire a private car for a more comfortable ride or if you’re traveling with a larger group. However, this is generally more expensive than scooters and taxis, with prices starting around 1,000-2,000 THB for a half-day rental. Private cars can be booked through your accommodation or local tour operators, but for most travelers, scooters or taxis are more than sufficient to get around.

7. Boat Tours

For those looking to see Koh Tao from a different perspective, boat tours are a great way to explore the island’s hidden coves, beaches, and snorkelling spots. Half-day boat tours typically cost around 1,000-2,000 THB per person, depending on the tour type and group size. These tours can be arranged through dive shops, travel agencies, or beachside kiosks, and are an excellent way to see Koh Tao’s stunning coastline from the water.

The 10 Best Things To Do On Koh Tao

1. Scuba Diving and Snorkelling

Koh Tao is one of the world’s top destinations for scuba diving and I definitley could see why. The water visibility is so clear and the marine life is so diverse. I ticked off swimming with turtles here! Whether you’re a seasoned diver or a beginner, there are dive shops around the island that offer a range of courses and dives.

Popular Dive Sites:

  • Chumphon Pinnacle: Famous for its large schools of barracuda, snappers, and occasional whale sharks (check the seasons before banking on seeing a whale shark - the best time to see them is between March and May).

  • Shark Bay: Known for its crystal-clear waters and the opportunity to spot blacktip reef sharks and turtles.

  • Hin Wong Bay: A quieter spot with stunning coral gardens and diverse fish species.

If diving isn’t your thing, there are plenty of snorkelling spots around the island, especially at Ao Leuk Bay, Sai Nuan Beach, and Shark Bay. You can rent equipment at most beaches and dive shops, or even join a guided snorkelling tour to explore the underwater world.

2. Hike to Viewpoints

Koh Tao offers some incredible hikes that reward you with panoramic views of the island, its beaches, and the surrounding crystal-clear waters. Some of the best viewpoints are accessible with moderate hikes that take you through jungle paths, rocky terrain, and past stunning flora and fauna.

John-Suwan Viewpoint: One of the most popular and easily accessible viewpoints on the island. The hike takes about 20-30 minutes and offers breathtaking views of both Sairee Beach and Ao Leuk Bay.

The Mango Viewpoint: A less crowded viewpoint, it requires a bit more effort to reach, but the views are well worth it. You’ll see a stunning 360-degree view of the island.

Aow Leuk Viewpoint: If you’re near Ao Leuk Bay, make sure to hike up to the viewpoint for sweeping vistas of the bay and surrounding area.

If you fancy exploring the island with a fun twist, there is an Island Adventure Treasure Hunt that you can do! It’s 6 hours and is a fully immersive escape room; visiting various beaches and viewpoints and even snorkelling for clues!

3. Relax on the Beaches

Koh Tao is known for its beautiful, serene beaches. Whether you want to relax under the sun or take a dip in the sea, there are plenty of options to choose from:

Sairee Beach: The largest and most popular beach on Koh Tao. It’s lined with bars, restaurants, and accommodations, and has a lively atmosphere, especially in the evenings.

Ao Leuk Bay: A quieter, more secluded beach perfect for swimming and snorkelling. The clear, shallow waters make it ideal for those looking to relax and enjoy the natural beauty.

Sai Nuan Beach: A hidden gem that’s small but beautiful. It’s the perfect spot for a more intimate beach experience, and it’s great for a swim or to watch the sunset.

Tanote Bay: Another quiet beach surrounded by lush greenery and rocky outcrops. It’s popular for snorkelling and also has some great spots for cliff jumping.

4. Kayaking and Paddleboarding

If you’re looking for a more active way to explore the coastline, consider renting a kayak or stand-up paddleboard (SUP). Both activities offer a fun way to get out on the water, enjoy the scenery, and explore the island’s hidden beaches and coves. You can rent these from beachside shops or at most resorts.

Tanote Bay and Ao Leuk Bay are popular spots for both kayaking and paddleboarding, as the waters are calm and ideal for these activities.

5. Party and Enjoy Koh Tao’s Nightlife

While Koh Tao is known for its relaxed vibe, the island also has a lively nightlife scene, especially around Sairee Beach. There are plenty of beach bars, pubs, and clubs where you can dance the night away, meet other backpackers, or enjoy a cocktail while watching the sunset.

  • The Rock Bar: A popular spot for a laid-back drink with great views.

  • Lotus Bar: Famous for its fire shows and party vibe, it’s a great spot to enjoy the nightlife.

  • Choppers Bar & Grill: For those looking to have a good meal with a drink in a fun, lively environment.

6. Take a Boat Tour

Exploring Koh Tao by boat is one of the best ways to see its natural beauty. You can rent a longtail boat, join a day tour, or hire a private boat to explore the island’s secluded beaches, coves, and neighbouring islands.

Snorkelling Boat Tours: These tours typically take you to the best spots around the island, including Shark Bay, Ao Leuk, and some hidden gems. You can spend the day snorkelling, swimming, and soaking in the beauty of the coastline.

Island Hopping: If you’re up for a longer day trip, consider an island-hopping tour that includes nearby Koh Nang Yuan or Koh Phangan.

7. Rock Climbing and Cliff Jumping

Koh Tao is also a great destination for rock climbing and cliff jumping. There are various spots on the island where you can safely jump from cliffs into the water below, with many of them being around Tanote Bay and Sai Nuan Beach. For rock climbing enthusiasts, Koh Tao offers a few climbing schools that provide lessons for beginners and experienced climbers alike. If you are ever unsure whether the water is safe to jump into, don’t. Try and find an area that is popular with others around you.

8. Yoga and Wellness

For those looking to relax and rejuvenate, Koh Tao has a number of wellness centres and yoga studios offering classes, retreats, and massage services. Taking a yoga class or enjoying a traditional Thai massage can be a great way to unwind after a day of adventure. My two favourite studios are The Reborn Yoga and The Blue Chitta.

Sunset Yoga: Many studios offer sunset yoga classes, which are an amazing way to stretch and relax while enjoying the beautiful Koh Tao sunset views.

Thai Massage: After a day of hiking or diving, you can treat yourself to a traditional Thai massage at one of the island’s wellness spas.

9. Explore the Local Culture

Koh Tao is a small island, but there are still some cultural and historical sites worth exploring. Visit Mae Haad Village to experience the local way of life, or stop by the Chinese Temple for a look at local spirituality.

Koh Tao’s History: The island has a fascinating history as a former penal colony, and learning about its past definitely provides a deeper connection to the place.

10. Visit the Turtle Conservation Centre

Koh Tao has a strong commitment to preserving its sea turtle population. The Turtle Conservation Centre is dedicated to protecting and conserving sea turtles, and you can visit to learn about their efforts. It’s a fantastic place to support local conservation efforts and learn more about the island’s marine life.
